Twenty

As usual, Ellie rose early the next morning. Feeling a little stiff, she glanced longingly out the window toward the hillside north of the house, but after the shooting yesterday, she decided to forgo a morning run.

She found herself smiling. Last night, Haley and Ty had driven to San Luis Obispo. This morning they would be speaking to Jules Weaver, the man in prison for forgery.

They were sleeping together, she knew. She would never divulge that she had been matchmaking when she’d introduced them, but she had always been good at reading people and she’d had a hunch they would be good for each other.

Still, there were lots of obstacles to overcome and she wasn’t arrogant enough to be certain things would work out between them. But finding happiness, she believed, was worth the risk.

Heading into the expensive marble bathroom that Harry had had custom designed for her, she showered and put on a little makeup. She was towel-drying her short silver hair when the phone started ringing.

Ellie walked over and picked up the receiver. “Good morning.”

“Mrs. Stiles?”

“Yes, this is Eleanor Stiles. May I help you?”

“This is Betty Jean Warren. I hope I’m not calling too early. I forgot about the time difference until I’d already dialed.”

“I’m always up early. I hope you’re feeling better.”

“Yes, much better. I’d like to speak to Haley...if it’s convenient.”

“I’m afraid Haley isn’t in at the moment. Perhaps I could help you, Mrs. Warren?”

“Oh, please call me Betty Jean. You see, the police just phoned...a Detective Cogan? He’s the policeman who looked into my husband’s death. He called to follow up on a shooting that occurred at your house yesterday. He said he believed it was just an accident, someone hunting deer or something, but I... Is Haley all right?”

“She’s safe, if that’s what you mean.”

“I don’t believe it was an accident, Mrs. Stiles. I think someone was trying to kill her. I can’t let that happen. I’m coming back to Los Angeles. I’m catching a flight first thing in the morning—I already have my ticket. I’m the one who got Haley involved in this, and now she’s in danger. I’ve got to talk to her, convince her to stop her investigation.”

“I don’t think there’s anything you can say that will stop her. She has her mind set and she can be very stubborn.” Ellie thought of her late sister, Haley’s grandmother on her mother’s side. Stubbornness definitely ran in the family.

“Either way, I’m coming back. I can’t let her handle this alone.”

“You’d be safer if you stayed in Michigan.”

“I’m coming back. Please tell Haley.”

“Wait!” Ellie’s fingers tightened on the phone. “Don’t hang up, Betty Jean. I have an idea. We have two bodyguards working here at the house. This morning, I hired a security company to patrol the grounds. The house is quite large, so why don’t you stay here? You would have your own room and bath and complete privacy. You would be safe here as you might not be in your home.
